How to Setup WOL (Wake on LAN)
Procedure:
All desktop or docked laptop workstations should have all the settings outlined in this document configured to enable WAL. This will assist in the deployment of patches to workstations that are powered off.
There are two sets of configurations: BIOS and Windows
ALL of the settings here (if available on the workstation and OS) must be configured properly for WAL to work.
Instructions:
BIOS settings – Not all BIOS are identical per manufacturer, this document will outline mainly Dell machines. Other manufacturers should have the same settings, mostly found in the Power Management, System, and Security sections of their respective BIOS.
Deep Sleep Control
- Click on Power Management and expand.
- Click on Deep Sleep Control:
- Select the radio button beside of Disabled:
Wake on LAN/WAN
- Still under Power Management, select the Wake on LAN/WLAN option:
- Select the radio button beside the option for LAN or WLAN.
Block Sleep
- Still under Power Management, select Block Sleep:
- Check the checkbox to Block Sleep (S3 State):
Click Save and Exit in the BIOS to save the settings and reboot the workstation into the OS.
Windows Settings – This document outlines specifically the Windows 10 operating System.
Network Adapter Configurations
- Open Network and Sharing Center by right clicking on your network connection icon in the system tray and selecting Network and Sharing Center:
- In the left menu, select Change Adapter Settings:
- A new window, Network Connections, will open and contain all the network connection adapters.
- Right click on the Ethernet icon and select Properties:
- The Ethernet Properties window will open, select the Configure button:
- A new window will open. Select the Power Management tab:
- Ensure that all three options are checked and enabled as per the graphic:
- Click on the Advanced tab:
- Click on Wake on Magic Packet and ensure that the Value is set to Enabled. Repeat for the Wake on Pattern Match option:
- Click OK
- Right click on the Ethernet icon and select Properties again.
- Select Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) and then select the Properties button:
- Click on the Advanced button in the General tab:
- Click on the WINS tab. Under the NetBIOS setting, select the radio button beside of Disable NetBIOS over TCP/IP:
- Click OK.
- Click OK.
- Click Close.
Power Options Configuration
- Open Control Panel
- Click on Hardware and Sound
- Click on Power Options
- In the left menu, click on Choose What the Power Buttons Do:
- Click on Change Settings That Are Currently Unavailable:
- Ensure that the “Turn on Fast Startup (recommended)” option is not checked:
- Click Save Changes.
- Reboot the workstation.
- Shutdown the workstation.
- Test the WAL feature through Desktop Central or other WAL tools.
